The great historic city of Bursa is dominated by the great bulk of the
2,554 metre Uludag mountain. According to the Greek geographer Strabo,
Bursa was founded by the Bithynian King Prusias I Cholus “the
Lame”, and he also gave his name altered to the Hellenistic
“Prusa” to the city.
Bursa was the first Ottoman capital in the true sense of the word, and its rulers lavished money and care on it. At the city Centre, the Archaeological Museum has an interesting collection of artefacts and ethnographic objects, including statues of Cybele, a bronze youth, Roman jewellery and coins from Prusa, Nicomedia and Nicaea . The Muradiye Complex was built between 1425 and 1426. It comprises a mosque, a soup kitchen, religious school, the tomb of Murat II and the tombs of a number of other Ottoman rayalty. The Bazaar was founded by Orhan Gazi in the 14 th century, was the heart of the old city and is still the commercial centre of Bursa . Ulucami (Grand Mosque) was built by Beyazit I. It is said that before going into battle at Nicopolis in Macedonia in 1396 he promised that, if victorious, he would build 20 mosques. He cheated and built one mosque with 20 domes!
