PAMUKKALE
Magical Pamukkale, the “ Cotton Castle ”, lies 19
km north of Denizli, off the main highway from Aydin (open daily dawn-dusk;
entrance fee). It is a shimmering white cascade, formed by limestone-laden
hot springs that have created stalactites, potholes and magical fairy-tables.
The water is reputed to be beneficial to the eyes and skin and to alleviate
rheumatism, asthma and dermatitis. Wading in the little pools on the plateau
is now illegal as the authorities battle to reverse the damage caused by
many thousands of visitors to this unique natural phenomenon. The alternative
is to take a plunge in the pool of the Hotel Pamukkale, right on the site
of the Sacred Pool (open dawn-dusk; entrance fee). It's exhilarating to
paddle through what feels like heated soda water while gazing at the ancient
fragments of columns below the surface.
As much fun as the baths are, don't neglect to visit the splendid Hierapolis (open daily dawn-dusk; entrance fee). The ruins spread over a mile from the city founded by Eumenes II of Pergamon and bequeathed by Attalus II to Rome . It was levelled by an earthquake in AD 17 but was rapidly rebuilt and enjoyed prosperity in the 2 nd and 3 rd centuries.
