PRIENE - MILETUS - DIDYMA
Priene
The ancient Ionian city of Priene (open daily 8 am-6.30 pm , 5.30 pm in winter, entrance fee) is reached by a short drive from Kusadasi through some of the most beautiful scenery in Turkey . The road winds trough silver-tinged olive groves, fields of cotton bursting with delicate rosebud blooms or fluffy white balls of ripe cotton, and pine-covered hills, past peaceful hamlets surrounded by hot pink oleanders.
Priene is in a spectacular location, resting on a slab of hillside above the Maeander Valley , with the pine-clad spur of Mt Mycale presiding majestically over the ruins. Once an active port, the town was landlocked by rising silt along the Maeander River . By the 4 th century BC, it became necessary to find a new site. New Priene was laid out in a strict geometric gridiron pattern devised by city planner Hippodamos of Miletus in about 450 BC.
Miletus
The present ruins of Miletus (open daily 8am-7pm ; entrance fee) date from its second foundation after the original city was destroyed by the Persians in 494 BC. Like Priene, the new town was planned according to the principles of Hippodamus. Although Ephesus enjoys more fame today, early Miletus was the most important city and principal port of the Ionian league. Its favourable position, on the Gulf of Latmos , and spirit of enterprise made it not only the wealthiest emporium of its time but also an intellectual centre.
Didyma
The most impressive single monument on the west coast of Ionia is at Didyma; if you visit only one of the classical sites close to Kusadasi (other than Ephesus ), Didyma's Temple of Apollo should be it. The oracle's earliest recorded prophesies date to the 6 th century BC. This early phase in Didyma's history ended when it was sacked by the Persians in 494 BC. Didyma remained silent for 150 years until Alexander the Great arrived, when the dry fountain of prophecy gushed to life and the oracle announced that Alexander was the son of Zeus, a result which pleased him so much that he retrieved the cult statue of Apollo from Persia and ordered the building of a new super-temple, which can still be seen today.
