TROYCanakkale ( Archaeology Museum , Troy )
Canakkale is only a few hours by car or bus from Istanbul . The town became an active trading and transit point between Asia and Europe after Sultan Mehmet II built a fortress here in 1452. Although it may not have reclaimed entirely the status it enjoyed in the 19 th century, when it was home to scores of consulates and customs houses, Canakkale has improved considerably in recent years. The harbour area has been refurbished and there is a fine new seaside promenade. Visitors to Troy , the Troad and Gallipoli frequently base themselves here.
The Archaeology Museum has artefacts, sculpture and ceramics from Troy , including a crystal amulet and lion-head (Troy II), a pot cover in the form of a female head (Troy III), goblets (Troy IV) and beautiful terracottas (Troy VIII). There are also collections of costumes, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman coins and a display of Ataturk's military clothing.
The name Troy conjures up visions of the star-crossed lovers Helen and Paris, of Greek and Trojan heroes, of betrayal and revenge, of cunning and deceit, of a huge wooden horse, of the destruction of a great city and of blind Homer who immortalised them all in two epic poems, the Iliad and Odyssey . Did Helen and Paris, Agamemnon and Clytemnestra, Achilles and Odysseus ever exist? Did these events actually take place? Was there really a siege of Troy ?
Whether you regard Homer as just an early minstrel and wandering entertainer, or as the source of history's most profound legends, the adventures of these heroic figures have become an integral part of the world's literary heritage, and their fates have enthralled and moved countless generations. The debate over the accuracy of Homer's account continues unabated.
